Small Apartment Storage Cabinet Buying Guide: Real-World

I live in a 40-square-meter studio — the living room and bedroom are one, and the kitchen and bathroom together are under 10 square meters. Small space, lots of stuff, so a storage cabinet became a must-have.

But buying a storage cabinet is more headache-inducing than writing code. The size doesn't fit, the style doesn't match, the quality is bad... I went through four cabinets and returned two before I figured out the ins and outs.

Today I'm laying out my experience, from IKEA to Amazon to Taobao, to help you avoid the pitfalls.

Small Apartment Cabinet Buying: Answer These Questions First

First, where will you put it?

In a small apartment, every inch of space is precious. Before buying a cabinet, grab a tape measure and measure the spot where the cabinet will go — length, width, and height. Don't forget to account for the door swing direction, some cabinets need extra clearance to open the door.

My first cabinet was the result of not measuring properly. When it arrived, the door would hit the bed when opened, so I had to return it. The shipping cost me $12, painful.

Second, what will you put in it?

Different things need different cabinets. A cabinet for books needs to be sturdy. A cabinet for clothes needs to be deep. A cabinet for miscellaneous items needs as many drawers as possible.

IKEA Storage Cabinets: The Value Choice

IKEA is my first choice for storage cabinets, for a simple reason: well-designed, transparent pricing, and reliable quality.

KALLAX

This eight-cube cabinet is probably IKEA's most classic storage product. I bought a four-cube one for the living room, which can go horizontal or vertical, working as a bookshelf, a room divider, or a TV stand.

Pros: flexible, you can add drawers, doors, baskets, free combinations. Priced from about $20, cheap.

Cons: the panels are honeycomb paper, so the load capacity is limited. Fine for books, not for heavy items. Plus it requires some assembly know-how — it took me two hours and my arms were sore.

Best for: budget-conscious folks who like DIY and don't have heavy items.

MALM

This is IKEA's drawer cabinet series. I bought a four-drawer one for the bedroom.

Pros: smooth drawers with soft close, no slamming. Simple look, goes with anything. Priced around $40, good value.

Cons: drawer depth is limited, big items are a tight fit. And it needs to be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping, which is awkward in a rental.

Best for: clothes, miscellaneous items, bedroom use.

BILLY

A classic bookshelf. I bought a short version to put next to my desk.

Pros: cheap, around $20. Adjustable shelf heights, so different book heights fit.

Cons: load capacity is average, full of books will sag a bit. And the tall version must be anchored to the wall, otherwise it can tip.

Best for: books, figurines, display.

Amazon: Imports and Special Needs

Amazon has some things you can't get at IKEA or Taobao, and is great for special needs.

IRIS Storage Cabinet

A Japanese brand. I bought a plastic drawer cabinet for the bathroom.

Pros: plastic material, moisture-proof, perfect for the bathroom. Drawers glide smoothly. No smell, much better than off-brand products on Taobao.

Cons: the look is plain, very "plastic" feel, doesn't look great in the living room. Pricier, about double the domestic equivalent.

Best for: bathroom, kitchen, balcony — humid environments.

Narrow-Gap Storage Cabinet

Amazon has some cabinets specifically designed for narrow gaps, only 15-20cm wide. I bought one for the gap between the fridge and the wall.

Pros: puts wasted space to use, with wheels for easy access. Multi-tier drawers, holds a decent amount.

Cons: expensive, same capacity costs much more than regular cabinets. Limited selection, single style.

Best for: homes with narrow gaps in the kitchen or bathroom.

Taobao / Tmall: Domestic Value Options

Taobao has the most options for storage cabinets, prices ranging from a few dollars to hundreds. But the waters are also the deepest, and I've stepped on plenty of landmines.

Solid Wood Storage Cabinet

I bought a pine bookcase, around $45.

Pros: the texture of solid wood is genuinely better than engineered wood, no formaldehyde smell, peace of mind. Strong load capacity, doesn't deform even when full of books.

Cons: pine is soft, easy to dent. And assembly is required, the holes don't always line up, and it can be a pain to put together.

Buying tip: look at the real user photos in reviews, not just the seller's marketing photos. Ask if it's solid wood or just a veneer — some products claim "solid wood" but are actually veneered.

Engineered Wood Storage Cabinet

Taobao is full of these — MDF, particle board, chipboard. Cheap and lots of styles.

I've bought two: a $20 shoe cabinet and a $30 wardrobe.

Pros: cheap, lots of styles, some designs are genuinely nice.

Cons: hit-or-miss quality. My shoe cabinet's hinge came loose after three months, the door wouldn't close properly. The wardrobe's back panel was paper-thin, wobbled with the slightest touch.

Buying tip: check the panel thickness, at least 1.5cm. Check the hardware quality, hinges and slides determine the lifespan. Don't buy the cheapest one — I learned the hard way.

Metal Storage Cabinet

Recently trendy industrial style, I bought a metal shelf for the kitchen.

Pros: sturdy, great load capacity, no fear of moisture. No assembly needed, just unfold and use.

Cons: prone to rust, especially in humid kitchens. Also heavy, a pain to move.

Buying tip: choose one with rust-proofing. For kitchen use, wipe it regularly and keep it dry.

Tips for Buying a Storage Cabinet

Check the material: solid wood > multi-layer board > particle board > MDF. For a small apartment, particle board or multi-layer is usually enough — good value.

Check the hardware: hinges, slides, handles — these determine the cabinet's lifespan. Good hardware is smooth, quiet, and durable.

Check the edge banding: the edge banding of engineered wood needs to be good, otherwise more formaldehyde is released and it's prone to moisture damage and warping.

Measure twice: can't be overstated. Length, width, height, door clearance, drawer pull-out clearance — measure everything.

Check the reviews: especially the follow-up reviews and reviews with photos — they show the real-life use. Don't just look at the positive reviews, check the negatives for what the issues are.

My Final Setup

Right now, the storage cabinet configuration in my small apartment is:

• Living room: IKEA KALLAX four-cube cabinet, for books, the router, and decorations
• Bedroom: IKEA MALM four-drawer cabinet, for clothes and bedding
• Bathroom: IRIS plastic drawer cabinet, for toiletries and cleaning supplies
• Kitchen: metal shelf, for pots and pans
• Behind the door: narrow-gap cabinet, for snacks and miscellaneous items

Total cost: under $200, and a 40-square-meter apartment is organized.
