I used to stare at my messy apartment and feel overwhelmed. Where do you even start when every room has clutter? The kitchen counters, the closet floor, the bathroom vanity—all of it needed help, and I had no idea how to tackle it without spending an entire weekend cleaning.

Then I tried a 30-day organization challenge. One small task each day, no marathon cleaning sessions. Just 15-30 minutes daily, and by the end of the month, my apartment was actually tidy. Not "company's coming" tidy—real, sustainable, everyday tidy.

The best part? You can start on any day. There's no equipment to buy upfront (though I'll recommend a few things that make it easier). Just pick today as Day 1 and start.

How This Challenge Works

Each day has one specific task. Some take 10 minutes, some take an hour. The goal is consistency, not perfection. If you miss a day, don't quit—just pick back up where you left off.

I've structured it room by room, starting with the public areas that guests see (living room, entryway) and moving to more private spaces (bedroom, bathroom). By the end, you'll have touched every corner of your apartment.

Week 1: Living Room & Entryway (Days 1-7)

First impressions matter, and your living room and entryway set the tone for your whole apartment. These are also the areas that accumulate clutter fastest.

Day 1: Entryway Reset
Clear everything from your entryway. Shoes, coats, bags, mail—all of it. Wipe down the floor and any surfaces. Then only put back what you use daily. Everything else gets stored elsewhere or donated.
Time: 20 minutes

Day 2: Coffee Table & Surfaces
Clear off your coffee table, side tables, and any other flat surfaces in the living room. Dust everything. Keep only 3-5 items per surface (lamp, plant, book, remote holder). The rest goes in drawers, bins, or gets donated.
Time: 25 minutes

Day 3: Media & Electronics
Gather all your remotes, cables, chargers, and electronics. Put matching remotes in a single holder. Coil up loose cables and label them. Test every charger—if it doesn't work, recycle it. Donate electronics you haven't used in 6 months.
Time: 30 minutes

Day 4: Throw Pillows & Blankets
Go through every throw pillow and blanket. Do you actually use them? Keep only what you love and use regularly. Wash the ones you're keeping. Store off-season blankets in a bin under your bed or on a shelf.
Time: 20 minutes

Day 5: Books & Decor
Take all the books off your shelves. Dust the shelves. Sort books into "keep," "donate," and "maybe." Put the keepers back in an order that makes sense to you (by color, by size, by genre—whatever works). Do the same for decor items.
Time: 40 minutes

Day 6: Toy & Miscellaneous Bin
If you have random stuff with no home (batteries, tools, pens, random gadgets), gather it all into one pile. Sort into categories. Put items back where they belong. For things without a home, create one. A small bin for "miscellaneous" is fine—just make sure it doesn't overflow.
Time: 35 minutes

Day 7: Living Room Floors
Move everything off the floor. Vacuum or sweep under the couch, chairs, and tables. Mop if you have hard floors. Only put back furniture that actually belongs in the living room. If something's been sitting on the floor for weeks, find it a proper home.
Time: 30 minutes

Week 1 done! Your living room should already feel 10 times bigger.

Week 2: Bedroom & Closet (Days 8-14)

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, not a storage unit. This week we're tackling clothes, bedding, and all the random stuff that accumulates in bedrooms.

Day 8: Nightstands
Clear off both nightstands (or just yours). Dust them. Keep only what you use every night—phone charger, book, glasses, maybe a lamp. Everything else goes somewhere else. Clean out the drawers too.
Time: 20 minutes

Day 9: Under the Bed
Pull everything out from under your bed. Sort into "keep," "donate," and "trash." For what you're keeping, use storage bins to keep it organized and dust-free. Label the bins so you know what's inside without pulling them out.

Time: 40 minutes

Day 10: Dresser Drawers
Go through each dresser drawer. Take everything out. Sort into "keep," "donate," "maybe." Wipe down the drawers. Fold or roll the keepers and put them back neatly. Use drawer dividers for socks, underwear, and accessories.
Time: 45 minutes

Day 11: Hanging Clothes (Part 1)
Go through all your hanging shirts, blouses, and dresses. Try on anything you're unsure about. If it doesn't fit or you haven't worn it in a year, donate it. Put the keepers back organized by type or color.
Time: 60 minutes

Day 12: Hanging Clothes (Part 2)
Today's pants, jeans, skirts, and jackets. Same process—try on, donate what you don't wear, organize the keepers. Use velvet hangers to save space (they're slim and clothes don't slip off).

Time: 50 minutes

Day 13: Shoes, Bags & Accessories
Gather all your shoes, bags, belts, scarves, and jewelry. Sort each category. Keep only what you wear regularly. Store shoes on a rack or in clear boxes so you can see them. Hang bags on hooks. Use a jewelry organizer instead of a tangled pile.
Time: 40 minutes

Day 14: Bedding & Linens
Go through your sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and towels. Keep 2-3 sets of sheets per bed (one on the bed, one in the wash, one backup). Donate any extras. Fold everything neatly and store it on a closet shelf or under the bed.
Time: 30 minutes

Halfway there! You should be able to walk around your bedroom without stepping on clothes.

Week 3: Kitchen & Dining (Days 15-21)

The kitchen is where clutter goes to multiply. Tupperware without lids, gadgets you used once, expired food—let's fix it.

Day 15: Countertops
Clear everything off your kitchen counters. Wipe them down. Only put back what you use daily (coffee maker, toaster, dish soap). Everything else goes in cabinets or drawers. Your counters will look twice as big.
Time: 25 minutes

Day 16: Fridge & Freezer
Take everything out of the fridge. Check expiration dates—toss anything expired. Wipe down all the shelves and drawers. Put food back organized by category (dairy, condiments, leftovers, etc.). Do the same for the freezer.
Time: 40 minutes

Day 17: Pantry & Food Storage
Go through all your dry goods, canned food, and snacks. Check expiration dates. Wipe down shelves. Put things back organized—cans together, snacks together, baking supplies together. Use clear containers for flour, sugar, rice, and cereal.

Time: 45 minutes

Day 18: Dishes & Glasses
Take all your dishes, glasses, mugs, and bowls out of the cabinets. Wash them if needed. Sort into "keep," "donate," and "maybe." Keep only what you actually use—you don't need 20 mugs if you live alone. Put the keepers back organized.
Time: 35 minutes

Day 19: Pots, Pans & Baking
Go through your pots, pans, baking sheets, and baking supplies. Get rid of anything warped, rusted, or that you haven't used in a year. Use a pot rack or lid organizer to save cabinet space. Store baking supplies together in a bin.
Time: 35 minutes

Day 20: Small Appliances & Gadgets
Gather all your small appliances and kitchen gadgets. If you haven't used it in 6 months, donate it. You probably don't need both a blender and a food processor. Store the keepers in cabinets or on the counter if you use them daily.
Time: 30 minutes

Day 21: Tupperware & Storage Containers
The dreaded tupperware drawer. Take everything out. Match lids to containers—if a container has no lid (or vice versa), recycle it. Keep only what you actually use. Stack them neatly or use a drawer organizer.
Time: 25 minutes

Week 3 complete! You can actually cook in your kitchen now without clearing space first.

Week 4: Bathroom & Whole House (Days 22-30)

Last week! We're finishing with the bathroom and doing final touches throughout the apartment.

Day 22: Bathroom Counter & Sink
Clear everything off your bathroom counter. Wipe it down and clean the sink. Only put back daily use items—toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, moisturizer. Everything else goes in cabinets, drawers, or bins.
Time: 20 minutes

Day 23: Medicine Cabinet
Take everything out of your medicine cabinet. Check expiration dates on all medications, vitamins, and skincare products. Toss anything expired. Wipe down the shelves. Put things back organized by type (meds, skincare, dental).
Time: 25 minutes

Day 24: Shower & Tub
Empty your shower or tub. Clean the walls, floor, and shower door/curtain. Toss any empty or expired products. Only put back what you actually use. A hanging shower caddy keeps everything off the floor and within reach.

Time: 30 minutes

Day 25: Bathroom Storage & Linens
Go through your bathroom cabinets and drawers. Sort toiletries, towels, and cleaning supplies. Donate unopened items you'll never use. Get rid of anything half-empty that you haven't touched in months. Fold towels neatly and store them on a shelf.
Time: 30 minutes

Day 26: Paper & Mail Clutter
Gather all the paper clutter in your apartment—mail, bills, receipts, documents. Shred what you don't need. File important documents in a folder or binder. Set up a mail station so future mail gets sorted immediately.
Time: 35 minutes

Day 27: Cables & Cords
Go through every room and deal with cable clutter. Coil up loose cables behind your TV, desk, and nightstand. Use cable ties or a management box to keep them neat. Label cords so you know what's what when you need to unplug something.

Time: 40 minutes

Day 28: Label Everything
Today is labeling day. Put labels on storage bins, pantry containers, closet shelves, file folders—anything that needs to be identified. A label maker makes this fun and easy, but masking tape and a marker work too.

Time: 45 minutes

Day 29: Final Walkthrough
Walk through your entire apartment with a notepad. Jot down any spots that still need work, any clutter hotspots, any organizing systems that aren't working. Fix the easy ones today, plan solutions for the rest.
Time: 25 minutes

Day 30: Celebration Day
You did it! 30 days, one task at a time. Take photos to remember how good this feels. Donate the pile of stuff you've been meaning to donate. Treat yourself to something nice—you earned it.
Time: however long you want

The Tools That Make It Easier

You can do this entire challenge with what you already have. But if you want to invest a few dollars in tools that make organizing easier, here are my recommendations:

  1. Clear storage bins – see what's inside without opening
  2. Label maker – makes organizing feel official (and helps you remember where things go)
  3. Drawer dividers – keep drawers from becoming jumbled messes
  4. Velvet hangers – slim, non-slip, and they make your closet look expensive

How to Stay Organized After the Challenge

The challenge is the easy part. Staying organized is harder. Here's what works for me:

10-minute nightly reset. Before bed, spend 10 minutes putting things back where they belong. Dishes in the dishwasher, clothes in the hamper, mail in its spot. It prevents the weekend-long cleaning marathon.

One-in, one-out. When you buy something new, get rid of something old. New shirt? Donate an old one. New mug? Pass on one you never use.

Monthly check-in. Once a month, spend 30 minutes going through the apartment. Donate things you don't use, reorganize any spots that have gotten messy.

Don't aim for perfection. A lived-in apartment is supposed to have some clutter. The goal is to have systems that work, not to live in a museum.

Final Thoughts

Thirty days, one task at a time. That's all it takes to go from "I should really organize" to "wow, my apartment is actually tidy."

You don't have to wait for Monday. You don't have to buy anything special. You can start today—even if you only have 15 minutes. Pick one task and do it. Tomorrow, do another. And 30 days from now, you'll walk into your apartment and smile.
